“The Doom of Voom”
1/6/2009 4:00:16 PM

Today many Voom customers received the ill-fated notification
that their Voom service will be discontinued as of April
30, 2005. Though the surprise has waned In addition to the
definitive short notice customers are left scratching their
heads as to “why” and rushing to pursue other
deals. With such slight notification Voom customers are
in the dark as to what to do next. The company president
Charles Dolan has tried in vain to maintain his company,
even throwing in a reported $400 million in April 2005 alone.
To no avail. The company called Voom, which broadcast 35+
high definition channels to customers, has gone under. Perhaps
shoddy marketing techniques resulted in the company’s
downfall, a company that never truly found its niche. Conceivably
when up against the larger runners DIRECTV and Dish Network
it never honestly stood a chance. Regardless, VOOM customers
will soon all be out on the market once again. No doubt
about it that larger companies will capitalize on this opportunity.
So which direction will previous VOOM customers tend? No
doubt time will be the principal indicator, until then we
play witness to a definite pull from all sides to win over
these estranged consumers.
Some of major concerns customers face now include: finding
a new service, costs of monthly programming, programming
and HD availability, and equipment costs. Although the old
VOOM equipment will be useless there are many opportunities
to save and obtain great service. For instance, DIRECTV
offers up to four rooms of equipment free and national programming
promotions to all new customers. Being that VOOM has focused
primarily on HD programming consumers will be more than
happy to note that DIRECTV has launched their newest satellite
this year with the capacity to transmit 1500+ HD channels!
Although VOOM was the premature leader in the HD arena DIRECTV
is readying for the masses. Sure, there are still equipment
costs as HD has not yet reached the majority of households,
but the costs are coming down. Also, compared to the $700+
VOOM was charging only a few years back for their equipment
the costs today are much more pocket friendly.
With VOOM’s last day being April 30 it is imperative
that customers decide soon which direction to take. One
of the best things to keep in mind is that with VOOM off
the market, Cablevision may be in trouble. Cablevision owns,
or owned, VOOM. It also lost out on bids to overtake Adelphia.
With these two failures so close in timing Cablevision may
actually be hiding something. If it goes under the two largest
cable companies, Comcast and Time Warner respectively, will
essentially monopolize the cable ring. Rising costs, falling
service, not exactly what customers want as options. Consumers
are aware of the fate of VOOM now, though it may have come
to a surprise to more than a few. With the service being
shut off on April 30, 2005 consumers need the information
to make informed decisions.
We, at Satellite Solutions, are offering VOOM customers
a deal on their HD equipment. Currently, HD programming
is free to new customers for three months. Three months
free! Many VOOM customers will already have their HD TVs
ready to go. Unfortunately new receivers will be in order.
As the price of HD equipment has gone stagnant recently
we have come up with a way to aid previously VOOM customers
handle the transition. Call our toll free number: 888-878-3106
for more details. Satellite Solutions is an authorized retailer
of DIRECTV. We strive to provide the utmost customer service
and we want to ease the transition of all our customers
as much as possible. Don’t you think you deserve quality
satellite television you can count on? We do.
